Fluoropolymer pricing – supply chain

The market for fluorine plastics like PTFE, FEP, PFA, PVDF, ETFE, PCTFE and ECTFE is very active lately. Before we were used to stable price levels but this year price adjustments (read increases) are still on going.

We believe it is very important to inform our valued customers in such issues.

A number of factors have contributed to the upward pressure on current fluorpolymer prices:
  • One of the most important raw materials to create PTFE is Fluorite and mainly produced in China. The Chinese governement declared this as a strategic mineral which lead to export restrictions to secure its own needs for their internal consumption. All resulting in less availability against higher demand after the crisis. The same with Chloroform.
  • Another raw material for PTFE is Freon 22 (CFK) a propellant which is harmful for the ozone layer and has been replaced by a less harmful but more expensive propellant. (up to 4x higher).
  • New applications for use of fluoropolymers are solar industry, like fuel cells and covering roofs with film are growing rapidly which again effects the supply and availability for other industries.
  • Several factories for PTFE were closed lately due to inefficiency, too high costs for maintenance or no investments and were not replaced (Asahi, 3M)
  • Japanese tsunami has also influence on the Japanese PTFE production plants (Daikin)

Since end of 2009 prices has been increased around 100%, pending on type, resin and expectations are for 2012 new increase will follow.
