What is PFA (Perfluoro Alkoxy)?

PFA combines the many positive properties of both PTFE and FEP. This polymer is primarily used when a material requires high flexibility, thermoplastic processability, weldability, and suitability for extrusion, injection moulding, or transfer moulding, as well as a higher continuous service temperature.

Product Specifications

Polyfluor offers PFA products with a lower melting temperature than PTFE and are also chemically inert and have a very low dielectric constant, which makes it insulating. Further, it has very low friction. PFA from Polyfluor also has the following properties:

  • Lower melting temperature than PTFE

What is PFA and how does it differ from PTFE and FEP?

PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) is a high-performance fluoropolymer similar to PTFE, but with lower viscosity during processing. As a result, PFA is thermoplastically processable, whereas PTFE is not. Compared with FEP, PFA offers higher temperature resistance and better chemical resistance. It combines PTFE’s non-stick behaviour, low coefficient of friction and excellent electrical properties with the processability of a thermoplastic.

What temperature and chemical exposure can PFA withstand?

PFA can be used continuously at temperatures up to approximately +260°C, and temporarily even higher depending on the application. The material is fully resistant to virtually all chemicals, including strong acids, bases, solvents and corrosive gases. Unlike many other plastics, PFA retains its structural properties under extreme temperatures and in highly aggressive chemical environments.

Is PFA suitable for applications in the food, semiconductor or pharmaceutical industries?

Yes. PFA is highly suitable for ultra-clean applications. The material is chemically inert, has extremely low adhesion and is easy to clean. For this reason, it is widely used in food-safe systems, semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical process installations and applications requiring very high-purity fluid handling. PFA can also be supplied in grades that comply with FDA and EU regulations, depending on supplier and product.
